Heres my issue with Linux on smartphones. Every video, chat or forum always point to the same devlopement issues and yet we are told it works. It doesnt work in the same sense that a car that has a broken transmission but still starts doesnt work as a car. I saw this with desktop distros and now with phones. I miss my Windows phone even more now.
The XA2 Ultra has been my daily driver for the last two years. I am really happy with it. Of course you should know that even though it runs Android Apps it doesn't come with the google services (which makes it attractive to most of the buyers, I guess). So Many but not every Android App will run flawlessly.
In December I was lucky enough to get a brand new Xperia 10 at a clearance sale for 1500 NOK (~$180). It was an absolute steal and SailfishOS 4 fixed most issues I had with Sailfish (most notably the extremely outdated browser engine). So I’m probably going to be using it until the Pinephone matures. I’m hoping the Xperia 10 ii will go on a similar sale as well when the Xperia 10 iii is out. (Assuming the Pinephone isn’t my daily driver by then)
You don't have to use the terminal to install Storeman or even enabling dev mode. Just enable 3rd party software installation under settings and scroll down to the latest rpm package here: https://openrepos.net/content/osetr/storeman
If you want better Open-source phones, support the companies by buying their products! If you buy alternatives to Pine phone, but want a better Pine phone, they will not get the means to make them better.
"Linux on smartphones is still in it's infancy" you obviously didn't read up on the history of SailfishOS? Maemo/Meego OSs were, for the most part, GNU/Linux based, and were running on the line of Nokia internet tablets/phones (7700, N800, N810, N900, N9) that go back all the way to 2004, is where Sailfish OS is actually coming from. That is lineage older than that of Android, or even iPhone.
I realize that there's a tiny niche group who are focused on the most privacy they can have…. But this just seems overly complicated simply for the sake of being complicated.
When you unlock the bootloader wouldn't you lose some of the functionality of the camera and other things. Sony has DRM keys for their software that you will lose if you unlock the bootloader. How do Sony cameras perform with Sailfish OS? Are the photos any better or worse? Can you still take photos at the full advertised resolution of the camera? Sony has been known for having high resolution cameras in their phones for a long while now and I am very pleased with my Xperia XZ Premium despite it being a 19 MP camera. My other Xperia has their 23 MP camera and it is also really good. They might not be the best there ever was but the photos are really good. Both of my devices have laser autofocus and an RGBC IR sensor to help get the colors right as far as white balance is concerned. I am not sure how many devices have that RGBC IR sensor
In Europe we also have /e/os from esolutions. Pre-installed. Very nice. My son uses Sailfish on the X, also very nice. Love it. But also love my FP3 with /e/os
I only use this system because I'm afraid of a future monopoly or that this duopoly will last forever between an apple and a google. I use the free license, so far, the only app I miss in the free version is whatsapp and the bank app
Your eyes roll more often than Rick Astley's hit song.
What keyboard are you using ?
@ 04:10 Oh, I'm using an X Compact to type this right now)))

Man, rocking a Nokia N900 in 2010 was truly the golden years, a true honest-to-God linux smartphone in my pocket…
N900 is my all-time favorite phone. I like Sailfish too. A question: Does Sailfish X version 4 allow you to record calls? (sender and receiver)
The UI for sailfish OS reminds me a lot of Blackberry 10 tbh. The home panel, the gesture controls, Very interesting!
what's the point using an alternative Linux os if it's closed source
